While, in retrospect, the essay is insufficiently critical of the Pinochet regime and the support provided to it by the United States government, in spite of the crimes committed by Pinochet and his supporters, the essay does have the merit of recognizing the atrocious rights violations committed by both Allende and Pinochet, without blindly praising Allende, as many critics of Pinochet have done. Early History and Challenges of the Second Persian Gulf War (2004)
