Mr. Stolyarov discusses one approach that advocates of indefinite human life extension must never take; they must never seek government funding for their projects, as this might defeat the ultimate objective of extending human life. Whenever the government funds a project, there are always strings attached; the money comes at the cost of severe controls and restrictions, as the fate of stem cell research in the United States today demonstrates. Moreover, opponents of indefinite life will be able to claim, quite legitimately, that government-funded life extension projects would be using their (the opponents’) tax money to fund projects with which they disagree. Government-funded projects also tend to reach a plateau in their development after an initial burst of progress – as evidenced by such past undertakings as NASA and the Interstate Highway System.
