Never forget Executive Order 9066<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 19,\u00a01942 \u2014 seventy-four years ago \u2014\u00a0Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066<\/a>.\u00a0With the stroke of his pen, the man who had earlier snubbed Jesse Owens<\/a> after the Berlin\u00a0Olympics used his executive powers to order the imprisonment of over 100,000 persons of Japanese ancestry (as well as thousands of German and Italian ancestry<\/a>) for the duration of World War II.<\/p>\n

\"internment-2\"<\/a>Most of the internees were natural-born American citizens, whose \u201ccrime\u201d was having a parent or merely a grandparent with Japanese blood. It was an act of naked, aggressive racism that damaged people and families, including my own, for generations.<\/p>\n

\"internment\"<\/a>It happened here. With the NDAA as\u00a0the law of the land<\/a>,\u00a0and with\u00a0war-mongering and xenophobia, it could happen here again<\/a>. We must oppose such collectivism and stand for freedom for all.<\/p>\n

On a related note, if you think Apple\u2019s current battle with the FBI<\/a>\u00a0over\u00a0iPhone security\u00a0is based on\u00a0empty fears of civil-liberties violations, think again. After decades of denials, the US Census Bureau\u00a0recently admitted that it provided the Treasury Department<\/a> with the names and addresses of Japanese-Americans\u00a0who were later tracked down and herded into concentration camps.<\/p>\n
